Workplace Callout
It is always quite a day when a C-suite member forgets how to handle a situation delicately, and it becomes viral.
Just when we think we've seen all the C-suite blunders possible. Whether it’s a CEO laying off staff via mass Zoom meetings or posting a crying selfie about letting employees go, Andi Owen comes into play.
Andi Owen is the CEO of furniture company MillerKnoll, who, according to Fortune, took home $3.9 million last fiscal year in incentive-based compensation on top of her $1.1 million salary.
Why is this important, you may ask? Well, keep reading.👇🏾👇🏾
In a recent company-wide Zoom call, an employee raised a concern, "How can we stay motivated if we're not going to get a bonus…What can we do? What can we do?”
Andi Owen had an interesting and controversial response to this question. See for yourself below:
People have been quick to tell Owen to take a trip to get-a-grip-Ville, especially because her response was seen as condescending and callow coming from a high-paid exec during economic instability.
In a post-pandemic world filled with economic turbulence, CEOs who usually spent their days delivering good news have become the big bad boss who, in most cases, are rarely affected by the news they share.
Another reason there is almost no empathy for C-Suite blunders is that executive pay has overshadowed worker pay over the past few decades.
A July report from the AFL-CIO, the largest US federation of trade unions, found that, on average, S&P 500 CEOs made about $18.3 million, or roughly 324x the median salary of workers, in 2021.
That's just obscene. 😳
Andi Owen's distasteful response has once again shown how out-of-touch C-Suite members can be with the reality of workers and prove how important constant review of pay range and the gap is.
The company has since issued a statement on the video, saying:
Ninety seconds out of a 75-minute internal meeting where we talked about a lot of positive things at the company, product launches, brand campaigns, connecting with customers, and business results, was leaked, and on its own it's misleading. It doesn't represent the full 75 minutes.

Distributed Company of the Week
For this week’s Distributed Company of the Week, we’re highlighting Zapier.
Zapier is an automation tool meant to help companies improve and scale their businesses. It even integrates with a ton of other apps run by companies like Microsoft and Google. Companies can sign up for one of their plans–for teams or companies–at different price points.
Zapier is a 100% remote company distributed across 38+ states and 39+ countries according to Glassdoor.
They also have a 4.7 rating there from 163 former and current employees! The company promotes asynchronous communication, and flexible work hours, and is transparent about its values, which they lay out here.
Some things that stood out to us when reading about how their company works: Since workers are across countries and time zones, Zapier makes sure systems and processes are laid out clearly and transparently, leans towards empathy over ego to better serve their global customers, and are always looking for ways to improve and grow, even if it comes with a bit of experimentation.
There’s always challenges when it comes to running a large company so even with standout company values, it’s important to remember no organization is perfect and mistakes happen.
Below is a review we grabbed from Glassdoor highlighting some pros and cons by one employee.

Distributed Tool of the Week

For this week's Distributed Tool of the Week, we are showcasing Krisp.ai, a noise-cancellation desktop application.
Krisp is perfect for global workers/job seekers since it makes your online calls noiseless which helps you become a better communicator. It removes the noise for both parties, creating a more seamless interaction.
You can use Krisp.ai for free or pay a fee of $8 monthly depending on the features you want to enjoy.
If you’re a job seeker that just wants to use this AI tool to improve interview communications or you’re a digital nomad, Krisp.ai helps to remove background noise.
This tool also comes with Background Voice Cancellation - a feature that allows all background voices to be canceled. This way, only the primary speaker’s voice will be kept while using a headset during online calls.
You can easily sign up to enjoy the features of Krisp.ai, an AI-powered meeting assistant!
Global Employment Word of the Week
Ready to learn something new?
Dispersed Team - is when members of a company are geographically spread out instead of being based out of one central office location. Often, this type of work also involves asynchronous communication, which we defined 2 weeks ago in this segment of the newsletter!
With all that being said, we’ll see you next time. 😉
Next week, we will be sharing high-level metrics about how the #wearedistributed community is growing, among other updates.
Remember, one of our goals is to be as transparent with you as possible and create a healthy discourse about the future of work for everyone by discussing issues surrounding toxic workplace cultures, global-centric employment practices, and unfair pay, to name just a few, through our social channels and community.
